Locate the P-trap from underneath the sink. The P-trap is the "U" shaped pipe which connects the bottom of the sink drain to the pipe leading to the wall. The curved portion of the P-trap always contains standing water to prevent noxious gases from entering the room.
Remove the P-trap from the bottom of the sink. The P-trap is attached to both the sink and the pipe which leads to the wall with circular fittings called slip nuts. The slip nuts are located at both ends of the P-trap. Attach a pair of adjustable pliers to each slip nut, then turn the slip nut with the pliers in a counterclockwise direction. Once loosened, the slip nuts slide away from the joint where the pipes meet.
Twist the P-trap away from the bottom of the sink.
Remove the pipe located at the bottom of the sink that the P-trap attached to. This pipe is secured to the bottom of the sink with another slip nut. Use the adjustable pliers to loosen the slip nut, then pull the pipe in a downward direction to remove it from the bottom of the sink.
Remove the tailpiece located at the bottom of the sink. The tailpiece is the metal portion of the sink which allows water to drain into the pipes from the sink. The tailpiece is attached to the sink with a circular metal piece called a locking nut. The locking nut rests against the bottom of the sink. To remove the locking nut, use a basket strainer wrench to grasp the locking nut and to turn the nut in a counterclockwise direction.
Push the tailpiece upward from underneath the sink to free it from the bottom of the flange sink.Lift the tailpiece away from the top of the sink to complete the removal.
