Kerala is part of the incredible India and Onam the heart of tourism in India. Yes, Indians love to celebrate each and every minute occasion. And fairs and festivals are a part of this colourful country. Foreigners from far flung areas come to be a part of some of the major festivals of India. Religion is a major part of the day to day life and thinking of the citizens here. The multi ethnic groups live in complete peace and harmony and participate with equal love and grace in each other’s major and minor festivals.

Each new thing is first worshipped and then used. Based on this principle is Onam- the eminent festival of Kerala and large part of tourism in India. Onam is celebrated for two reasons. The first is basically for the honour of Mahabali, the mythical Asura king of ancient Kerala. Secondly, it is a way of welcoming the start of harvest season. India is largely dependent on farming even today. So, before starting- Indians prefer worshipping God to save their crops against all natural calamities. They strongly believe in their respective Gods and before starting anything new- whether big or small bow their heads in front of God and pray. Onam is a large part of it and is celebrated for ten days at a stretch in the month of August/ September.

People visit temples, sing, dance, gift clothes, enjoy fairs, and eat good food. They wash and clean their homes, decorate with flowers, as they believe deeply that Mahabali pays visit to individual house during those ten days. So, you can say that all these decorations are a way of welcoming God. They eat food in the traditional banana leaves and enjoy the Vallamkali (the legendary snake boat race), the most. Vacations in India has its own matchless charm. Come and be the part of it to experience once in a life time experience.
