Since the inception of the Maruti 800 in India in December 1983, the Indian automotive world has been obsessed with the idea of small car. The idea of small car has caught the automobile world like a wild fire so much so that even big players in the field are now bringing in their own versions of the small car. One such biggie is the Japanese car major, Honda.
It should not be forgotten that, about 30 odd years down the line, Honda along with Toyota and Nissan was one of the strong contenders for the people’s car project for India conceptualised by Sanjay Gandhi and his mother Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India. The project ultimately fell into the lap of Suzuki Motor Corporation which later formed the successful auto brand Maruti Udyog Limited with the collaboration of Government of India. It has now become Maruti Suzuki India after the Government of India sold its majority shares and stocks to Suzuki Motor Corporation.
Life has come one full circle for Honda after twenty-five years since the launch of the Maruti Suzuki 800. Now, Honda has finally accepted that ‘Small is Big’ in India and has come out with their “New Small”.
Honda Siel Cars India announced the world Premiere of the Honda new Small Concept on 5th January at the 10th Auto Expo 2010. The Honda New Small Concept is a concept model of a new small-sized car which Honda is currently developing for India and other countries.
The Honda New Small Concept is a ‘true Honda’ with futuristic design and sufficient boot space. The ‘Efficient energetic Exterior’ based on front-forward design gives the New Small Concept an appealing dynamic presence. Honda's design principle ‘Man Maximum - Machine Minimum’ has defined the underlying approach in the design concept of the New Small. Developed at Honda’s Automobile R&D Centre in Japan, the Honda New Small Concept is designed to be a family car with a capacity to accomodate five passengers comfortably.
