Can Everton make it into Europe again?
The English Premier League has been short of quality this season. At the top no team seems to want to grab the title race by the throat and as such no one side has been able to run away with things. Outside the top six or seven the quality has been even poorer. Birmingham have put together a good run, but there style of play is unattractive and it seems unlikely that they will be able to keep this up for the rest of the season, regardless of how much money they spend during the January transfer window. At the bottom things are even worse. Portsmouth are in turmoil both on and off the pitch while sides like Bolton, Hull and West Ham have struggled to put any kind of run together. It seems that any side from around tenth downwards could find themselves in the bottom three this season. For this reason, it's somewhat surprising to see Everton down among the bottom group of teams.
The Blue half of Merseyside has enjoyed a couple of good seasons of late, finishing fifth. While a lack of resources means that no one seriously expected Everton to make a sustained challenge on the top four, nor did they think the side would find themselves in a relegation scrap. Of course Everton have a very good reason for being down in the bottom half of the table - injuries. However, it looks like that could be set to change. Slowly but surely Everton's first teamers are returning to action and their creditable 2-2 draw against Arsenal at the weekend shows how good they can be. It's no surprise that some Premier League experts are now tipping them for a European spot. If they can keep players fit, then they should be able to rise above the average teams above them and stake their claim once more.
